I sat bolt-upright on the table, gasping for air and covered in a thin sheen of sweat as I awoke from my trance. I scooted towards the edge of the table, my heart thundering wildly in my chest, as I looked around the room to see if the others had seen what I had. On either side of me, Helena and Max leaned against the table, weak and shaking from the magick they spent awakening my dormant memories as tears glistened in their eyes.

My memories. Nugua… I suddenly thought, deep in torment as I threw my hands over my face and screamed into my palms.

How could she? How could Nugua do something so cold and heartless? How could she allow my parents and my grandmother to be killed without a care in the world like that? Did the Order and their mission really mean that much to her that she was willing to overlook basic human sympathy? And what about the rest of the Druids? What the hell could she have wanted so badly that she needed to torture them back at the base first? Why not take what she needed right then and there while she had them set up before her like ducks? What the hell did any of this mean?

The doors to the library burst open, and all three of my men, flanked by Kieran, stood at the threshold. One look in my direction, and all three of my men came rushing to my side as I continued to scream and sob. Lóng reached me first and placed his hands on my shoulders lightly, as if afraid to scare me out of my fragile state of mind.

“What the hell did you guys do to her!?” Shuāng asked as he rubbed at my lower back, his tone brimming over with anger.

Max turned to look at him, her eyes glowing a faint red as her power subsided. “Holy shit. Holy shit, I can’t believe we just saw all of that. It was horrible. I–I can’t even put it into words.”

“Put what into words!?” Lán sè scowled as he stood beside Shuāng. “What happened to her!?”

“Calm down, lads,” Kieran said as he draped his arms over Max’s trembling shoulders. “Can ye nay see something terrible has happened? Look at all of them!”

Lán sè’s back straightened anxiously before he turned his attention to Lilianna, who seemed to be a bit more depressed than her usual self, and Helena, who was busy wiping tears on the back of her hands. He frowned and placed a hand on my thigh, rubbing my leg softly to offer me some sort of comfort, but nothing seemed to work. I was far too hurt to think of anything other than what Nugua and her team did to my family and my village.

“Just what the hell did you guys see that caused this reaction?” Shuāng asked, his brows furrowed with concern.

“It was horrible,” Lilianna’s small voice replied. “There was so much blood and chaos. So much unnecessary death.
